Monday 20 February 2017 marked the declaration of famine in South Sudan, the first country to declare famine in over six years. At this time the number of people who were already food insecure were estimated to be some 4.9 million (42% of the population), out of which 100,000 were facing famine conditions.

All We Can and the Methodist Church in Britain met quickly and decided to launch an appeal to respond as soon as possible in South Sudan but also to help avert famine in other countries on the verge of disaster.

March 2017 update

Across South Sudan, more than 3 million people have been forced to flee their homes and nearly 7.5 million people need humanitarian assistance and protection (OCHA, Humanitarian Response Plan 2017) as a result of multiple and deepening crises, including conflict, inter-communal violence, economic decline, disease, and climatic shocks.

Evidence shows that, in the Southern part of Unity State in South Sudan, one in three children are acutely malnourished. This unprecedented situation is spilling over into other states and people are already dying in the country as a result of the food crisis.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters All We Can has started responding to the immediate and urgent needs in the country through its experienced humanitarian aid partners in the region. These partners are focused on responding through the provision of food aid and nutritional treatment. So far over £100,000 has been given to partners in South Sudan who are working in Unity State and in other states at risk of famine.

In coming weeks we will keep this page updated and will share how your generosity is making a difference in South Sudan.

Pray for South Sudan

Please pray:

That a peace agreement will be implemented and a lasting ceasefire will be reached.

That food and nutritional treatment will reach those who need it most.

For All We Can's humanitarian aid partners and their staff who are often put themselves at personal risk to deliver life-saving supplies.

That the international community will continue to provide the immediate assistance and longer-term support needed by the people of South Sudan to survive and later thrive.
