Rhodri’s Christmas wish

All We Can staff have been inspired by a young supporter in Wales called Rhodri. His big-hearted decision to forgo some of his usual Christmas treats to help others around the world encapsulates the spirit of the season.

Eight-year-old Rhodri from Gelligaer Community in Caerphilly has an unusual Christmas wish. After seeing a bright booklet at the back of his church he decided that this Christmas he wants to focus on helping others around the world, and he would love everyone else to join in too:

“I was leaving chapel and I saw a colourful booklet, so I picked it up. Inside were fantastic gifts for people who really need them. We are so lucky and have lots of nice things, and others don’t, so we need to help as much as we can. I have asked Santa to have less things so that others can have more”

Rhodri’s proud mother Mechelle set up a GoFundMe page for him when he said he wanted to help some of the communities he had found out about in All We Can’s Extraordinary Gifts catalogue. All We Can offers people the chance to buy practical presents at Christmas time that help people in some of the world’s poorest communities to become all that they can. The funds raised through the purchase of these gifts allow the charity to continue to support its talented local partners working in poor communities across the world in countries including India, Cameroon, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Rhodri was especially inspired by All We Can’s work in India where women receive chicks enabling them to set up a small poultry business. After just a week Rhodri had already raised over £100, a fantastic achievement and more than enough money to provide 120 chicks for women setting up a small farming enterprise.

At a time of year when many children are thinking about what presents they might like to get underneath their Christmas tree Rhodri’s determination to do something to make a difference in the lives of people he has never met has already inspired others. Mechelle told All We Can that Rhodri used to want to work in McDonald’s when he grows up, but now hopes to be someone who travels and helps others in the world. She has been so impressed by his desire to give, rather than get, this Christmas.
