All We Can is responding to Hurricane Melissa in partnership with the Methodist Church in Britain.
We are working closely with our regional partner, the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA), to ensure that funds raised are directed to where they are most needed. MCCA is working on co-ordinating emergency relief efforts across affected communities in the region.
All We Can is responding to Hurricane Melissa in partnership with the Methodist Church in Britain.
We are working closely with our regional church partner, with whom we have been partnered for several years, including supporting their response to Hurricane Dorian in The Bahamas in 2019, to ensure that funds raised are directed to where they are most needed.
This local partner is responding through their networks in Jamaica and Haiti. In Jamaica, needs supported include hygiene kits, shelter materials and infrastructure for potable water distribution. In Haiti, the focus is replenishing school materials, supporting children return to their education.
Bishop Juan says that the Jamaica District of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) was well prepared for the disaster. He commented, “The relief stage will be the challenge, as we evaluate what has happened and what investments will need to be made to restore infrastructure and help people get back on their feet.”
Bishop Juan continued, “The climate crisis is not coming, it’s here. Melissa is the harbinger of what we are to expect as the normal in terms of Caribbean storms systems. The Church is not an NGO or Government but it is the first-place people turn to, whether they are ascribed to the teachings of Jesus or not.”
